Barbara Hookings

Mrs. Barbara Robbins Hookings age 78 of Milledgeville passed away Friday, October 30, 2015. Daughter of Stuart and Katharine Robbins, she was born and raised in Memphis, TN. She graduated from the Memphis City School system and attended Newcomb College at Tulane University in LA. She graduated from Memphis State University in 1957. She had a Bachelor’s degree in Education and two Master’s degrees in Special Education - Special Education for the gifted and Special Education for the Hearing Impaired. She was an Educator for over 30 years teaching in a variety of schools in Memphis including: Ridgeway High School, White Station Junior High School, and Shady Grove Elementary School. She was Chaplain of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) in Germantown, TN and a member of the Lydia Guild at Saint George’s Episcopal Church in Germantown, TN. She was a Volunteer for GPAC – Germantown Performing Arts Center and a Docent for the Dixon Gallery in Memphis, TN. One of her hobbies was genealogy. She wrote 8 books, with three in the State archives of Tennessee in Nashville, TN. She also was a world traveler, having travelled to Canada, Europe, Turkey, The United Kingdom, Ireland and throughout the United States. She enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several bridge groups. She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, GA. Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Peter Hookings of Milledgeville, GA; sister, Marion Robbins Moore of Jacksonville Beach, FL; son, Mark (Mary) Hookings of Milledgeville, GA; daughter Diana (John) Evans of Jacksonville, FL; Her grandchildren include: Cole and Emily Evans Jacksonville, FL; Amanda (Mark) Whatley of Guyton, GA; Trea (Danielle) Ward of Pearland, TX; Ashleigh (Ronny) Hart of Covington, GA; Adrien (Keith) Borger of Norcross, GA; Allyce (Jeremy) Singletary of Jackson, GA Other family members are: Niece, Katharine Moore (Douglas) Boggess; Great-nephews, Stuart and Martin Boggess all of Albuquerque, NM Memorial Services at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, GA will be held on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 7:30PM. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Stephens Episcopal Church.
