Carol Little Saferight

Virginia Carolyn "Carol" Saferight of Eatonton, GA, passed away on July 11, 2026, at the age of 81. Born on November 4, 1944, in Claremont, North Carolina, Carol lived a life centered on family, hard work, and doing things her way. Carol’s nickname was Puddin’, but anyone who knew her would tell you she was a lot tougher than the name suggested. In 1963, she married her husband of nearly 62 years, William L. "Bud" Saferight, after meeting him at an American Legion dance. Bud and Carol moved to Georgia in 1972. After buying property at Lake Sinclair in 1980, they eventually made “the Lake” their full-time home, where Carol spent some of her happiest years. Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Saferight; her brothers Donald Little, Steve Little, and Bill Little; and her sister Pat Heavner. She is survived by her son, Tad Saferight (Kathie Winningham); grandchildren Ashley Saferight (Michael Curry), Steven Saferight (Courtney), and Kristen Saferight (Vic Prince); great-granddaughter Addi Saferight; and sisters Brenda Sloan, Miranda Pope (Melvin), and Elaine Sweezy. Carol retired after a 20-year career with Cigna but staying busy was never a problem for her. She had a legendary green thumb and took enormous pride in her yard at the Lake. She was known for her flower beds, yard art, hanging baskets, bird feeders, and garden gnomes. Carol was also an avid reader; she went through thousands of books during her lifetime and was almost never without a paperback nearby. Carol led and shaped the family with her steady guidance and common sense. Known to her grandchildren as "Mamaw," she was always willing to pass down life lessons and her opinions about the right way of doing things. One of the family’s favorite traditions was Carol’s legendary 20+ pound lasagna, layered up in a huge turkey roasting pan. Another family favorite was her homemade pineapple ice cream, made in an old-fashioned ice cream maker. She also enjoyed the thrill of finding a bargain, hunting through “junk stores” looking for hidden treasures. Thanks to her efforts, basically the whole family owns at least one Tupperware pitcher that she bought for twenty-five cents. To her family, Carol will be remembered for much more than her collections, recipes, or gardens. She was dependable, resourceful, fiercely independent, and deeply devoted to the people she loved. She built a home where family gathered, traditions were created, and everyone knew exactly where they stood. Her absence will be felt every day by those who knew her best.
