Joyce Crowe

Joyce Webb Crowe, a fun-loving and vivacious mother and sister, and a favorite “nana” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, died on May 9 at the age of 86. Born in the early morning hours of December 17, 1931 in Oglethorpe, Georgia, Joy was welcomed to this life by her loving parents, Albert Nelson Webb, Sr. and Mae Hogan Webb. This day was an especially happy occasion because it was also her mother’s birthday. Joy was an only child for eight years before the birth of her dear sisters Janice Webb Marshall and Jeannie Webb Hodges. Her beloved brother, Albert Nelson Webb, Jr. was born six years later. She cherished her family, and her favorite pastime was talking about her daughter, Andrea Wise Novak, grandsons, Stephen Andrew Wise, John Daniel Wise and William Tyler Wise, and her great-grandchildren Preston, Alba, Caroline and Robert. Joy graduated from high school in Lakeland, Georgia and attended South Georgia College. She worked as secretary to the dean of the Emory School of Dentistry in Atlanta and for Crowe Construction Company. Milledgeville became her home in 1983 where she worked for the County Extension Agency and for the dean of continuing education at Georgia College. Joy lived up to her name by bringing joy to everyone, but she was also vibrant and strong, and often a force to be reckoned with. A lifelong lover of nature who enjoyed the outdoors, she often -- even into her 70s -- accompanied students from Georgia College on rugged field trips in the woods where they would study plants and flowers. In her own backyard, she cultivated a beautiful garden, taking particular pride in her roses. Joy lived a good life and surrounded herself with family and friends at every opportunity. Until the very end, she maintained her good humor and lit up for visitors, making sure each person felt welcomed and loved. In honor of her life. There will be a service at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Milledgeville, Georgia on Saturday, May 26 at 11am.
