Nellie Merritt

Nellie Ruth Smith Merritt, passed away Saturday, April 9, 2022. Funeral services for Nellie Ruth Merritt will be conducted Thursday, April 14, 2022 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home of Milledgeville. Interment will be in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Williams Funeral Home on Thursday, April 14, 2022 from 12 Noon until the service hour. A native of Ashburn, GA, Nellie was born to the late Homer Martin Smith and the late Ima Courtoy Smith. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Gerald Wade Merritt, her brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Gail Smith, and by a niece, Kim Smith. Nellie loved to laugh, and being Nana to “our girl”, Lizzy. She had worked at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. Mrs. Merritt had graduated from Ashburn High School where she was Valedictorian and she was a mother, Homemaker, and Sunday School Teacher to both children and adults. Nellie was also a talented Pianist, Seamstress, and Crocheter. She was a member of the Irwinville United Methodist Church. Nellie is survived by her daughter, Susan (& Fred) Boothe of Alpharetta ; her granddaughter, Lizzy Boothe ; her sister, Joy Francis Long of Tennessee ; her sister-in-law, Joyce Carter of Fernandina Beach, FL ; her niece, Marie Brown ; her nephews, Mike and Mell Merritt, Brian and Shawn Smith, as well as various cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout the country.
